wine review: Burrowing Owl 2017 Athene

Ottawa, ON

June 2020

Matt’s review: A fresh and expressive Okanagan blend showcasing the strength, elegance, and harmony of Burrowing Owl’s premium wines. A blend of 57% Syrah and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Burrowing Owl’s estate vineyards on the Black Sage Bench, it’s deep and concentrated with layers of rich dark fruits, sweet spices, pepper, Black Sage, with a savoury textured finish. The wine was aged for 18 months in a blend of new and second fill oaks from around the world then bottled unfiltered, and the result is pure Black Sage Bench expression of these two great varietals, and as they say the sum is greater than the whole with Athene. Enjoy this perfect BBQ wine with anything on your grill from tenderloin, rib steak, to jalapeno and cheddar stuffed burgers. Tasted June 2020. 92 points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca
