wine review: Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery Reserve Pinot Noir 2019 and Reserve Meritage 2020, Okanagan Falls, British Columbia, Canada

May 2023

Ottawa, ON

Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery made their debut in 2003, initially producing a modest 40 cases of Pinot Noir and 500 cases of Meritage. Now, after two decades of unwavering dedication, Leslie & Jim D’Andrea, the proprietors, continue to thrive and earn numerous accolades. This year marks their 20th anniversary of crafting premium wines at their enchanting winery in Okanagan Falls.

Situated in breathtaking Okanagan Falls, Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery offers unparalleled views of the iconic McIntyre Bluff, which define the southern edge of the Okanagan Valley Sub-GI. The terroir of this region is truly exceptional, shaped by the remnants of the glacial era and dotted with pristine vineyards where some of the finest wines are born in the Okanagan Valley. Distinctive geological formations, including kettles, dot the vineyards and serve as host to specific single vineyards that yield award-winning wines each year.

Among their outstanding portfolio, Noble Ridge’s Reserve Pinot Noir and Reserve Meritage stand out as remarkable examples of the high-quality wines they have been crafting for the past two decades. These wines capture the essence of their unique terroir and showcase the expertise and passion that have defined Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery since its inception.

Noble Ridge’s 2019 Reserve Pinot Noir: approachability, complexity, and depth of flavor. Noble Ridge’s Reserve Pinot is an impressive expression of OK Falls Pinot. The nose shows dark cherry, plum, sage, wood spice, mocha, and graphite. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a creamy yet refreshing texture with well integrated and very fine tannins and a delightful freshness persisting on the finish. Pair this delicious Pinot Noir with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or pork tenderloin. Tasted May 2023. 92+ points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca

Noble Ridge 2020 Reserve Meritage: An impressive blend of 74% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon (including some of the oldest Cabernet vines in the Okanagan Valley (circa 1986), and 2% Malbec, from Noble Ridge’s Home Vineyard overlooking Peach Cliff at the southern limit of Okanagan Falls, BC. The nose shows a beautiful bouquet of dark berries, plum, sweet spices, and graphite. Full bodied with great structure, impressive texture with fine grained tannins, there’s a wonderful balance of fruit and savory elements in this fine Meritage, highlighting the great assemblage the winemaker achieved in their blend. Enjoy with braised bison tenderloin or osso buco with grilled sweet potatoes. Tasted May 2023. 93 points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca
