Wine review: Achaval Ferrer Quimera 2019

Ottawa, ON

August 2023

Matt’s review:

Achaval Ferrer’s Quimera 2019 is a fresh and elegant blend of low yield vineyards from some of the finest high altitude vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina, at the foot of the magestic Andes. A blend of 59% Malbec, 16% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, which produces a very complex wine with great elegance, finesses, and structure. The nose shows fresh black fruit, plum, blueberry, graphite, sage, and earthiness. The palate highlights the beautiful texture on this finely crafted wine. The term “Quimera” has multiple meanings depending on the context, and in the case of this premium wine, it’s used to describe something that is illusory, fanciful, or unattainable, such as the quest the Achaval Ferrer embarks on each vintage for this remarkable wine of outstanding quality. Enjoy 2023-2035. Tasted August 2023, 94+ points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca
