Matt’s review:
In the ever-evolving world of wine, it’s a rare pleasure to uncover a gem that not only captures the essence of its origins but also offers a fresh perspective on familiar varietals. Bodega Piedra Negra’s Gran Lurton Corte Friulano 2022 is precisely such a treasure, presenting the best expression of Friulano you’ll find outside of Collio DOC, where this varietal is often considered to be at its peak. Given the challenges of sourcing authentic Collio DOC Friulano outside of Italy, this wine emerges as a remarkable alternative, especially after my tour of Collio in 2023 where I gained a profound appreciation for the world-class wines they’re producing there. But this is from Argentina and it’s a wine I highly recommend!
This blend, consisting of 80% Tocai Friulano and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, is crafted from organically grown grapes sourced from 25-year-old vines. The meticulous process in crafting this exceptional wine begins with maceration before fermentation and aging, with the Tocai Friulano resting in first and second-use French oak barrels while the Sauvignon Blanc spends time in clay amphorae. This approach not only honors traditional methods but also showcases the components in their best expressions, reminiscent of the extraordinary wines of Friuli which are in a class of their own, well generally I would say until I tasted this blend and realized how great this Argentinian blend is!
The 2022 vintage benefits from a cooler climate, producing a wine with tension, energy, and great texture. Aromatically, the Gran Lurton Corte Friulano reveals a complex bouquet that evolves beautifully as it warms in the glass. The nose is inviting showing a complex bouquet of orchard and tropical citrus fruits, gooseberry, lemongrass, almonds, all underpinned by a hint of wood spice.
On the palate, this wine is mouthwateringly juicy, offering a delightful creaminess that enhances the experience and adds to the textural complexity. The gooseberry note lingers gracefully, leading into a long, chalky finish that invites you back for another sip. The interplay of flavors creates a depth that is both satisfying and intriguing, making it a standout choice for those who appreciate the subtleties of premium Friulano and premium Sauvignon Blanc from cool climate regions.
Given its complexity this wine would pair beautifully with elaborate dishes featuring seafood, grilled vegetables, herbs, and fruit compotes. But don’t let that hold you back from popping it and enjoying on its own and appreciating the complex characteristics it shows now and will continue to for the next decade.
Bodega Piedra Negra Gran Lurton Corte Friulano 2022 is a wine that invites exploration and discovery. For those who appreciate the roads less traveled in the wine world, this exquisite offering is perhaps the best alternative to the world-class wines you’ll find in Collio DOC.
