wine review: LAN Gran Reserva 2016

Ottawa, ON

October 2024

Matt’s review: LAN Gran Reserva 2016, a blend of 97% Tempranillo and 3% Mazuelo (Carignan) grapes sourced from low-yielding bush vines in the esteemed Rioja Alta region, this Gran Reserva tells a story of heritage and tradition. It spent over two years in barrel followed by three years in bottle before release, enhancing its approachable style that’s both rustic and refined. The deep ruby color immediately captures the eye, suggesting a richness that is further echoed in its complex aromatic profile. On the nose, this wine unfolds elegantly, with an inviting bouquet that showcases ripe plum and fig, intermingled with leather, tobacco, and cacao, sweet spices including nutmeg and clove with saline olive and balsamic notes add a layer of old world-charm.  The palate reveals its full character with vibrant dark fruit and spice at the forefront, supported by dusty fine tannins and a savoury aspect that persist beautifully on the long finish. Beautifully balanced, showing the harmonious interplay between the fruit, savoury and spicy layers, making a great pairing option with braised dishes, wood-fired pizza, or hearty pasta.  A wonderful choice for those wanting an aged and ready to enjoy premium wine at a great price.  Tasted October 2024.  93-94 points.  Matt Steeves – www.quercusvino.ca

Look for it at LCBO later this year. $33ish.
