Matt’s review: 2014 Materium Cabernet Sauvignon, Maybach Family Vineyards, Napa Valley
The 2014 Materium Cabernet Sauvignon from Maybach Family Vineyards is a remarkable wine of exceptional provenance, a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship that has defined the Maybach name for over a century.
This single vineyard Napa Cab was sourced from the Weitz Vineyard, perched 1,000 feet above the Silverado Trail. The vineyard’s rocky and shallow soils challenge the vines, the corresponding low yields producing deeply concentrated fruit with silky tannins that highlight the exceptional terroir for ultra premium wine production.
The nose reveals a complex blend of blackberry, blueberry pie, cassis, graphite, and subtle floral notes. As it opens up, additional layers emerge, revealing hints of forest floor, truffle, and subtle barbecue smoke that adds an intriguing depth.
On the palate, the 2014 Materium is nothing short of extraordinary. It offers a full-bodied richness that is beautifully balanced, with an impressive harmony between the refreshing acidity and elegant tannins. Layers of blueberry, blackberry, and cassis fruit. The finish is long and refreshing, lingering for minutes with dried dark fruit, blueberry pie, and a touch of spices and herbs. The texture is sublime, showcasing the wine’s complexity and refined character.
Winemaker Thomas Brown’s minimalist approach allows the wine’s terroir to shine through, and the result is a masterpiece that can be enjoyed now or cellared for decades to come. The 2014 Materium Cabernet Sauvignon is not just a flawless wine; it encapsulates the essence of its vineyard and the artistry behind its creation. This is a brilliant wine that exemplifies the exceptional provenance of Maybach Family Vineyards, making it a must-try for any serious wine enthusiast. Enjoy now through 2045 and beyond.
