Matt’s review:
Thomas Bachelder’s Les Villages Niagara Pinot Noir 2022 is an impressive expression of Niagara’s cool-climate terroir where this noble grape can excel, especially when sourced from the finest single vineyards in the region. After a brief decant the nose reveals aromas of dusty cherry, earthy undertones, and sweet baking spice, creating an inviting, layered bouquet. As it opens up, subtle notes of clove and spice emerge, alongside a hint of rose petal, savoury fruit, crushed rock and summer meadow, offering a deeper, more nuanced expression of Niagara’s terroir. On the palate, it’s savoury and elegant. Flavors of cherry are complemented by floral elements of rose, clove, and spice, building a complex, layered profile. Finely textured with delicate tannins revealing refreshing crushed rock minerality, further adding to the wine’s depth. Well-integrated acidity, the finish persists with great length. Decanting longer reveals even more potential, allowing it to truly shine, becoming more expressive and showcasing its serious character, great structure and provenance thanks to those single vineyards and expert winemaking. This is a complex, serious wine that represents some of the best of Niagara Pinot Noir from select single vineyards, at a wonderful price point. Fantastic value for those seeking a refined, yet accessible Pinot Noir. Enjoy over the next 5-10 years with grilled lamb, pork, salmon, or charcuterie. All certain to impress.
