Matt’s review: Esteemed Napa producer, Rutherford Ranch, has launched a new label that’s attracting a lot of attention for the quality and complexity it brings at such remarkable value. Rutherford Ranch’s latest offering, in its debut vintage (2014), is the 2 Range Napa Valley Red Wine. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petite Sirah, all sourced from vineyards within the Napa Valley surrounded by the Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges. Deep ruby with an opaque core, this rich and seductive wine shows black cherry, cassis, fig, mocha, clove, vanilla, violet, and sweet tobacco on the nose. Full-bodied with voluptuous texture, the layers of rich and refreshing fruit and spice are supported with fine sweet tannins and a beautifully balanced structure that’s equally intriguing as it is polished. 2 Range is one of the finest Napa wines you’ll enjoy for under $40, and it’s guaranteed to be loved by many. The structure, complexity and consumer- friendly style of this wine makes me think Napa-Super Tuscan, two incredible wines styles in one. Enjoy this fine wine with charcoal grilled prime-grade New York strip steak or savour with a good friend fire-side. A top pick of 2017 and buy by the case wine when its made available for sale through Vintages. Tasted January 2017. 94 points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca
Fortunate Americans can buy winery direct – and Canadians can look for it in Vintages later in 2017
