On March 24th Music and Beyond is hosting a live wine auction in Ottawa.
If you’ve never been to a live wine auction, Ottawa’s Music and Beyond auctions are a great experience and offer plenty of aged vintage wines at very

affordable prices, along with a full range of iconic (aka higher cost) wines so there’s something for every budget and every wine preference whether that’s old world, new world, still, sparkling, or dessert wines.
I took a peek at some of the wines that are up for grabs and selected my top wine (wish list) picks as noted below. I hope to see you there!
Starting off with red Burgundy.
- Aged Burgundy are some of the most sought after wines around the world. I love Pinot Noir, and this one from Nuits Saint Georges, now at 10+ years aged would be a great treat to enjoy in the near term when paired with mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or beef bourguignon.

2. Super Tuscan wines are some of the best value iconic wines, and Solaia is top of the list for Italian Super Tuscan wines. Recent vintages of Solaia sell for ~$250 a bottle so this one with a decade of aging already complete would be a terrific gift to pick up for a Father’s
Day present…hint hint.
3. Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines are some of the most well recognized premium French wines. Typically much more affordable than most Bordeaux reds, Chateauneuf-du-Pape can be found for as low as $35 and it’s not uncommon for price tags to reach hundreds of dollars. This bottle is a particularly high-quality and interesting offering that would be gorgeous to enjoy now or permit another 10+ years of cellaring for those with the will power to let it rest without acting on the urge to pop the cork, decant, and enjoy with a few lucky friends.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape translates roughly to “The Pope’s new castle” and, indeed, the history of this appellation is firmly linked with papal history. In 1308, Pope Clement V, former Archbishop of Bordeaux, relocated the papacy to the town of Avignon.
La Crau is without a doubt Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most famous vineyard. The vineyard is owned primarily by Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe, one of the most classic Châteauneuf’s. Get one for yourself at the Music and Beyond auction in March!

4. A wine auction wouldn’t be complete without some iconic red Bordeaux. A bottle of Chateau la Mission Haut-Brion from 2005, one of the best vintages ever achieved, certainly in my (and my parent’s) lifetime, in fact the winery notes that 1949 and 2005 had nearly identical weather conditions that produced perfect grapes and ultimately perfect scoring (i.e. 100 point) wines. This is a wine that any wine aficionado would love to have in their cellar.
