wine review: Icellars Riesling Icewine 2016 – $48 (200ml)

Ottawa, ON

July 2018

Matt’s review: Niagara’s ultra premium boutique winery, Icellars Estate Winery, produced a stunning Riesling Icewine that highlights the strength of the exceptional 2016 vintage. Picked on December 24th, and bottled in spring 2017, this decadent and refreshing wine showcases beautifully the strengths of Niagara Riesling in a style that Canada does better than anyone else, Icewine. Expressive wildflower honey, caramelized pineapple, honeydew, poached pear, and subtle petrol notes on the nose and palate. Mouthwatering and full bodied, the crisp acidity and creamy texture offer such a paradox which makes this wine so unique, expressive, and delicious.  Fantastic when paired with flambé, such as Pineapple Icewine Flambé, Bananas Foster, Bombe Alaska, and Cherries Jubilee. Enjoy this fantastic Icewine over the next decade and beyond. Tasted July 2018. 94 points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca
