Matt’s review:

Stratus White Label Cabernet Franc “Amphora” 2020 is the latest release from this renowned Niagara-on-the-Lake winery. Harnessing ancient winemaking traditions with a modern twist, Stratus has produced an exceptional terroir-focused wine that beautifully showcases the greatness achievable in Niagara Cabernet Franc.

2020 was a 5 star vintage in Ontario, culminating with ideal conditions for a sunny autumn harvest which enabled the Cabernet Franc to achieve full phenolic ripeness while preserving the refreshing characteristics you’d expect from this cool climate region. Stratus’ winemaker embraced Italian Amphorae to help preserve and highlight the wines cool-climate character, while delivering a beautifully balanced wine, resulting in crunchy red and dark fruit with a harmonious albeit vibrant and youthful energy and texture.

An inviting deep ruby colour gives you a sense of what’s to come. The nose shows a bouquet of black berry, black currant, black cherry, plum, liquorice, graphite, and pepper. The palate reveals layers of crunchy dark cherry, plum, liquorice, herbs and spice. Vibrant, youthful, energetic, with dark plum, black cherry, graphite and pepper persisting on the long and textured finish. An exceptional expression of premium Niagara Cabernet Franc which will continue to evolve and gain further complexity over the next 10-15 years. Enjoy with grilled steak, roasted beets and blue cheese. Tasted April 2024. 95+ points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca
