Matt’s review: The Foreign Affair Winery continues to impress with their appassimento winemaking techniques. The value-priced 2014 Conspiracy is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (46%), Cabernet Franc (40%), and Merlot (14%) that once pressed was re-passed and allowed to ferment on the skins of the naturally dried (appassimento) grapes before it was pressed and aged in French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels for 15 months. Imagine a (Canadian) Super Tuscan Ripasso…that’s what the Foreign Affair has created in Conspiracy. The nose shows richly flavoured black cherry, sweet plum, roasted beets, clove, anise, dried herbs, and grilled peppers. Medium-full bodied with soft tannins and a spicy finish, this would be a terrific complement to wood-fired pizzas or Peposo (Tuscan Beef Stew). Enjoy 2016-2019. Tasted December 2016. 89 points.
