Matt’s review: For over 20 years Burrowing Owl has been producing some of Canada’s finest wines, from the Wine Capital of Canada, Oliver, BC. Their 2014 Syrah was sourced from their Black Sage vineyard in Oliver, and their Lake Eva’s vineyard in Osoyoos. The grapes were hand picked and sorted, vinified then barrel aged for 18 months in a blend of 70% French, 22% American, 4% Hungarian, and 4% Russian oak, 20% one-year-old and 60% neutral oak to preserve the fresh fruit characteristics while softening the wine to integrate all its components. Deep ruby red colour, the nose shows sweet dark cherries, pepper, violets, plum, bacon, and smoked meat. Rich and succulent with great texture and refreshing acidity, this Syrah is ideally suited for enjoying with grilled meats or rich stews. Drink 2017-2022+. Tasted May 2017. 92 points.
