Matt’s review: CheckMate’s Silent Bishop (Merlot) is sourced from three relatively cooler western benches in the far south of the Okanagan Valley (Oliver North, Golden Mile, and Osoyoos West), with vineyard elevations between 1027ft and 1306ft – all contributing to the refreshing characteristics in this premium wine. Grapes were hand-picked/sorted/destemmed, and underwent a 100% wild ferment with extended maceration – resulting in a deeply coloured and flavourful wine. Delicious dark plum, blueberry compote, roasted beets, pipe tobacco, and sweet spices on the nose. Medium-full bodied, with delicate fine tannins, black currant and dark fruits persist on the long and elegant finish. Another impressive vintage of Silent Bishop from the talented team at CheckMate, one of Canada’s most iconic wineries. Tasted bottle 1305, July 2022, 93 points.
