Matt’s review: Black Bank Hill Runway Red 2020 is a bold, expressive blend that showcases the skillful marriage of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc from this esteemed Lincoln Lakeshore estate. A wine that leans into power while maintaining balance, it makes a striking impression from the first pour. The nose is vibrant and inviting, with black cherry, blackberry, fragrant incense along with tobacco, pepper, and graphite creating a very complex and complete bouquet.
On the palate, Runway Red 2020 is big and bold, with layers of ripe black fruit flavors complemented by sweet spices, wood smoke, and a consistent graphite edge that runs through the wine. The texture is rich, with fine integrated tannins that provide a smooth and structured mouthfeel. With its full-bodied profile, the wine retains a refreshing quality, with bright acidity that adds lift and keeps the wine from feeling overly heavy. This makes it an excellent choice for warmer months, especially when paired with grilled or smoky foods. However, its structure and ample fruit and spice make it a great candidate for medium term cellaring, allowing the flavors to evolve further with age.
While its bold character makes it a fantastic pairing with hearty BBQ fare, particularly grilled meats and vegetables on a smoker, its spicy character and rich dark fruit makes it a perfect option for enjoying with braised dishes throughout the year.
