Canadian Wine Writer Matt Steeves Wins International Journalism Award in Italy for Feature on Collio Wines.
The Consorzio Tutela Vini Collio, in collaboration with the Department of Agro-Food, Environmental and Animal Sciences of the University of Udine, the MIB Trieste School of Management, and ARGA Friuli Venezia Giulia, has honoured Canadian wine writer Matt Steeves with the Collio Award for Best Popular Journalism Article Published in Foreign Media.
This recognition was presented on October 27, 2025, in memory of Count Sigismondo Douglas Attems of Petzenstein, a visionary figure in Friuli Venezia Giulia’s viticultural history. The competition celebrates individuals and initiatives that have meaningfully advanced the understanding and appreciation of Collio’s wines — scientifically, practically, or through communication excellence.
Matt Steeves received the award for his 2025 feature article, “Italy’s Best White Wines You’ve Probably Never Heard Of…”, which introduced readers around the world to the exceptional wines of Collio, highlighting the region’s unique terroir, craftsmanship, and growing international acclaim. Through his storytelling, Steeves encouraged global wine enthusiasts to explore this small yet world-class region bordering Slovenia, renowned for producing some of Italy’s finest white wines.
A recognized voice in the Canadian and international wine community, Steeves has travelled extensively across Italy — including Collio, Valpolicella, and Sicily — sharing his insights with English-speaking audiences in Canada and abroad. His writing bridges the worlds of culture, geography, and enology, bringing the stories of passionate winemakers and their land to life.
“It’s a great privilege to receive this honour from such an esteemed group,” said Steeves. “Collio represents the perfect harmony of tradition, innovation, and respect for terroir. To help share its story with the world is both a joy and honour.”
The Collio Award underscores Steeves’ commitment to elevating global awareness of Italy’s most dynamic wine regions and the artisans shaping their future.
