Wine review: Bachelder 2023 Wismer-Foxcroft Chardonnay Parcelle Nord

Matt’s review: One of Canada’s most distinctive expressions of terroir-driven Chardonnay, crafted by Thomas Bachelder from a prized northern parcel of the Wismer-Foxcroft Vineyard, which he first isolated in 2013. Situated along Niagara’s Twenty Mile Bench, this remarkable site, with its limestone-rich glacial soils and unique microclimate, consistently produces Chardonnay of extraordinary depth, precision, and mineral character.

The 2023 is a stunning expression of this celebrated vineyard, revealing beautiful aromas of lemon zest, white peach, chamomile, and delicate pastry, layered with crushed stone and subtle flinty notes. The palate is wonderfully textured yet energetic, delivering concentrated citrus, ripe orchard fruit, and a touch of buttery croissant, supported by vibrant acidity and a distinctive chalky, saline minerality. Exceptional purity, tension, and length define the finish, showcasing the unmistakable signature of Wismer-Foxcroft.

My highest-rated Chardonnay at i4C 2026, earning 96 points. An outstanding Canadian Chardonnay that comfortably stands alongside the finest examples from Burgundy.
