Matt’s review: Pian di Staffa Riserva Montecucco DOGC showcases the complexity of the Sangiovese from this up-and-coming Tuscan region. Situated in the shadow of the ancient volcano, Monte Amiata, and beside renowned regions where much of the world’s finest Sangiovese is produced, including Brunello di Montalcino & Super Tuscan sites, Pian di Staffa 2015 is an expressive, balanced, and intriguing wine showing great fruit, spice, and rustic character. The nose shows dark and dried cherry, warm spices, sandalwood and balsamic notes, tobacco, autumn leaves, and flinty minerality. A repeat on the palate where the lively acidity brings freshness while the integrated tannins harmoniously coat the palate making this fine wine a fantastic choice for grilled steaks, rib roast, and aged cheese. Enjoy 2020-2032. Tasted July 2020. 91 points. Matt Steeves – http://www.quercusvino.ca
