Matt’s review: Meritage 2017, Burrowing Owl’s flagship wine, is a blend of (59%) Cabernet Sauvignon, (20%) Merlot, (18%) Cabernet Franc, and (3%) Petit Verdot, all estate grown from their Oliver-based winery in the heart of the Okanagan Valley. Vinified and barrel-aged separately for 15 months in a blend of French and Hungarian oak, then assembled and barrel-aged in a variety of different barrels for another 3 months to achieve the perfect balance of integrated tannins, wood-influence, and overall harmony. Deeply coloured, the nose showcases the impressive estate-grown fruit with savoury dark fruits, dark cherry, black sage, graphite, and volcanic soil influence. Full bodied, and richly flavoured, the fresh and juicy dark fruits, including blueberry and Saskatoons, interlaced with sweet spices persisting on the long finish. Great structure and texture, this wine has been assembled with care to seamlessly integrate the best characteristics from each of the varietals in one harmonious blend. It’s wines like Burrowing Owl’s Meritage, and other premium BC wines with great acclaim, that highlights why the Okanagan Valley is becoming increasingly recognized as one of the world’s fine wine regions. Enjoy the 2017 Meritage with grilled beef tenderloin with a rosemary infused Port reduction or a Scotch fillet steak with red wine jus – absolutely delicious! Drink 2020-2030.
